State Pension Laws provide over N200million, Other Outrageous Benefits for Former Governors
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has revealed how Akwa Ibom, Sokoto, Gombe, Abia and Edo states in their pension laws made provision for outrageous pension benefits for former governors of the states.
According to SERAP, Akwa Ibom state under its pension law provided that the formers Governors of the state including Senator Godswill Akpabio who is currently the Senate President are entitled to annual payment of N200million, two official vehicles with chauffeurs, furniture replaceable every four years, an aide, a cook and lifetime security guards. They are also entitled to annual medical care in any country of their choice as well as mansions in Abuja and in the state.
Sokoto State in its pension law provided that former governors including Aminu Tambuwal and Aliyu Wammako who are currently collecting salaries and allowances as senators, are entitled to pension payment of N200 million, a mansion, utilities, office, cars replaceable every four years, medical care for themselves and their spouses and children anywhere.
Under Gombe State pension law, former governors including Ibrahim Danwkambo and Danjuma Goje, who are currently receiving salary and allowances as senators, are entitled to pension payment of the sum of N300 million, a 30-day holiday in any country of their choice yearly, two utility cars replaceable periodically and medical treatment anywhere.
Abia State provided in its pension law that former governors including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who is currently receiving salary and allowances as a senator, are entitled to receive 100 percent of salary of the incumbent governor, an official car, a police orderly, two policemen for the security of their household, allowances for cooks, stewards, amongst others.

Recall that SERAP had dragged the 36 state governors, some of whom are former governors, to court over their failure to redirect public funds budgeted to pay ex-governors undeserved life pensions, to pay the counterpart funds that would allow poor children to enjoy access to quality basic education in their states.
In late 2022, over N40 billion was reportedly paid to 47 former governors from 21 of the 36 states in pensions and provision of houses, staff and vehicles replaceable between three and four years.
