Pensioner in BBC Africa Eye documentary on “Why many Nigerian pensioners are denied access to their pensions”, Dies

Mr Efika Cletus Lafin, a pensioner from Cross River state who featured in a BBC Africa Eye documentary into corruption in Nigeria’s pension system, has died, according to residents in his village. Mr Efika was one of the pensioners who was declared a ghost pensioner by Cross Rivers state and his pension was still not reinstated even after the documentary.

Mr Efika confirmed to BBC that he tried severally to prove that he was alive by travelling to Calabar, the capital of his state, Cross River, 5 (five) separate times, but still his pension was not reinstated. He also disclosed that when he travels, he had to sleep outside, even in the rain, because he could not afford a hotel and this made him sick.

This is very sad and quite unfortunate. We hope to see a Nigeria that treats all her pensioners with Dignity. We expect the Cross River State government to have speedily investigated the case immediately after the documentary was released.

BBC Africa has confirmed that Cross River state government has made no comment on the findings of the documentary.
