Federal Government has showed Political Will on the Affairs of Older Persons – NSCC
The federal government has exhibited strong political will of social inclusion of Older Persons in Nigeria.
The commitment displayed by President Muhammadu Buhari indicates that he has not kept matters of older persons in view as was the case by past administrations in Nigeria.
Director General of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), Dr Emem Omokaro was speaking in Birnin-Kebbi, while addressing Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Ageing in Kebbi State.
The Director General who is on a working visit to the State said President Buhari did not only sign the National Senior Citizens Centre Bill into law, he inaugurated the Governing Board of the National Senior Citizens Centre as well as approved the National Policy on Ageing.
With the National Policy on Ageing in place means there is a plan and approach by the Federal Government and necessary machinery in place giving NSCC the impetus to engage all sectors for older persons inclusion in the nation’s development agendas.
Dr Omokaro said NSCC set up the Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Ageing to enable the inclusion of all states of the federation in consonance with the National Senior Citizens Centre Act 2017 which stipulates that there should be the promotion and maintenance of linkages, partnerships and relationship with States and Local Governments as seventy percent of Older Persons are in the rural areas.
She reaffirmed that the Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Ageing is NSCC’s structure at the States and Local Governments level that should mobilize to influence policies towards the inclusion of Older Persons.
She reiterated that things will gather momentum and older persons in Nigeria will be better placed if State Governments can put in place a policy and a law as is the case at the federal level where there is an Agency that is focal on Older Persons and state a policy that will articulate all the challenges according to the context of the states.
