Drama as Senators Reject appointment of PenCom Acting DG as DG
Some Senators have rejected the appointment of Hajia Aisha Dahir-Umar, the current Acting Director General of National Pension Commission (PenCom) as the substantive Director General of PenCom. President Buhari in a letter to the Senate had sent her name and five (5) others for nomination as Director General (DG), Chairman and Commissioners.
The nominees are;
- Hajia Aisha Dahir-Umar (North-East), current Acting DG nominated as Director General of PenCom
- Oyindasola Oni nominated as Chairman of PenCom
- Hannatu Musa (North West) nominated as Commissioner
- Clement Oyedele Akintola (South West) nominated as Commissioner
- Ayim C. Nyerere (South East) nominated as Commissioner
- Charles Efe Sylvester Emukowhale (South-South) nominated as Commissioner
The senators voiced out the rejection immediately after the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, read out Buhari’s letter seeking the Acting DG confirmation as the substantive DG of PenCom.
Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, declared that the Acting DG is from the North-East, and therefore can not replace the former DG, Mrs. Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, who is from the South-East, alleging that the Acting DG nomination was a flagrant breach of the Act establishing PenCom.

Abaribe backed his rejection with the provisions of Section 20(1) and Section 21(1) and (2) of the Pension Reform Act 2014, which states that “in the event of a vacancy, the President shall appoint replacement from the geo-political zone of the immediate past member that vacated office to complete the remaining tenure.” He insisted that the replacement for Mrs Anohu -Amazu must come from the South East.
Abaribe said, “I recall that the tenure of the incumbent was truncated, therefore the new letter from the president that has now moved the Chairman of the Commission to another zone may not be correct because it is against the law setting up the National Pension Commission. Before you (Senate President) send it to the appropriate committee, I wish to draw the attention of the committee to it.”
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, in his response told all aggrieved senators to send all points for the rejection to the committee responsible for the review of the nominations.
