Abia State Governor signs Law to Stop Pension Payment to former Governors & Deputies

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has signed a law to stop pension payment to former governors and deputy governors of the state. The “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024.”

The Abia State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the bill for the law titled “A Bill (H.A.B 11:) for a Law to Revoke the Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected therewith.”

The Bill was sponsored by Uchanna Okoro, the Majority Leader and member representing Arochukwu State Constituency. The Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, announced the passage of the bill after its first and second reading, consideration at the committee of the whole and its third reading during the day’s plenary. Mr Emeruwa, while congratulating members, said that the bill would reduce the state’s governance expenses and redirect resources towards development.

There has been lots of controversies over the years concerning the outrageous life person and other enviable benefits being paid to former governors and their deputies, by stopping such payment in Abia State, the state will have more funds for the payment of pension to the state retirees.
