ICAN Begins Review of Accounting Curriculum of Higher Institutions.
The Institute does Chartered Accountants nigeria(ICAN) has begun a review of the accounting curricula of Universities and Polytechnics in the country. ICAN President Mazi Nnamdi Okwuadigbo, FCA, who said this while on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu in Abuja last week said the review was necessary “to cover new standards/trends and the digital/technological disruptions affecting the accountancy profession”.
He said that the exercise was in line with guidelines issued by the International Accounting Education Standards Board. Mazi Okwuadigbo also called for the inclusion of the Institute’s representatives in the accreditation team of accounting departments of tertiary institutions usually conducted by the Education Ministry through the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He said this would enable the Institute “to contribute its quota in reducing the gap between the theory and the practice and ensuring that accounting curricula of tertiary institutions are in line with the demands of the dynamic market”. “One of our objectives at ICAN is to ensure that accounting students, and prospective ones, are well-prepared and counseled on the need to balance good academic performance, professional qualifications, technological competence and excellent managerial skills”, Mazi Okwuadigbo said.
The 55th ICAN President also offered the Institute’s technical assistance for the training of relevant staff of the ministry on accounting and allied fields. In response, Adamu said his ministry had resolved to work closely with ICAN because of the Institute’s commitment to national development. He pointed out that the lives of the citizenry will be affected positively if the same passion and professionalism used by the Institute is deployed in the education sector.
