Funds for Minimum Wage Arrears included in 2022 Budget – Military Pension Board
The Military Pension Board (MPB) says funds for the payment of 24-month minimum wage pension arrears to military retirees have been included in its budget estimates for 2022, which they are currently considering in the National Assembly.
The chairman of the board, Commodore Sabiru Lawal, revealed this in a statement issued in Abuja recently.
Lawal assured all retired military personnel that payment of their outstanding minimum wage pension arrears would begin once the 2022 budget was approved by the assembly and assented by Buhari.
He said that the board’s attention had been drawn to a series of protests by some groups of military veterans and their determination to carry out more such protests in some parts of the country and the FCT.
Although Lawal noted that the protests had been peaceful, he nevertheless appealed to retirees to desist from any further agitation, as their demands were being heeded by the agencies.
“Our esteemed retired military men will recall that in May, MPB notified them through a press release of my conversations with the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning (FMFBNP) regarding the payment of all their outstanding fees.
“This was the result of the consequent adjustments to pensions, caused by the Wages Law of 2019.
“My commitments to the ministry paid off in June, as funds were provided to the board for the payment of deficits in the tips of retirees / discharged from service between April 18, 2019 and April 30 2021, and the implementation of a new pension payment table. .
“Consequently, deficits in bonuses for deserving retired / laid-off staff were paid in July, while all active retirees were placed on their new May 2021 WEF pension pay scale, as noted.
Accordingly, I wish to inform our esteemed retirees that the funds for the payment of the 24 months arrears of the minimum wage pension to military retirees are included in our budget estimates for 2022, currently under consideration in the national assembly. “I am also pleased to inform retirees that the board’s budget estimates for 2022 have been successfully defended before the relevant committees of the national assembly.
“Therefore, I like to take this opportunity to inform you and assure you that once the budget is approved and assented, the payments of the 24 months outstanding of the minimum wage pension will begin,” he said.
Lawal also assured retirees, their closest relatives (NOK), and other well-meaning Nigerians that the board would stand firm and uphold the timely payment of all fees owed to the retired military or their NOKs.
Furthermore, he urged retirees to continue to show greater understanding and patience in the form of protests or public demonstrations, adding that all issues at stake were receiving due attention.
Lawal said that due to the current security situation in Nigeria and the spread of a new variant of COVID-19, any gathering on behalf of the protests should be discouraged in the administration of military pensions.
